The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) tools
are being implemented statewide in Indiana’s behavioral health system. Incremental
implementation of a common assessment tool across child service systems is planned by an interagency implementation team. The
team includes the Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA), Office of Medicaid
Policy and Planning (OMPP), Department of Correction (DOC), Department of Child
Services (DCS) and Department of Education (DOE).John Lyons, PhD,
University, Chicago, provides consultation.
The Adult Needs and Strength Assessment (ANSA) will be implemented statewide by mental health
and addiction providers who contract with DMHA in July, 2008. An ANSA pilot in two community
health centers and Indiana's Access to Recovery (ATR) grant will begin March 1, 2008.
The Indiana Behavioral Health Assessment System (IBHAS) has been created as the
technology application (home) to support the CANS. IBHAS is an interactive web site
that collects assessment information, calculates algorithms or decision model thresholds
to inform intensity of care decisions, and produces individualized and aggregate
reports regarding assessments, outcomes, and trends. Beginning July 1, 2007, IBHAS
will be available to DMHA contract providers. Gradually the website will become available
to other child service providers and systems with certified CANS users.
